This working group focuses on understanding and protecting the ecological integrity of the Magens Bay watershed. This includes watershed management, helping to support the other properties donated by Arthur Fairchild – namely Drake’s Seat & Fairchild Park – and raising concerns about neighboring developments that may impact the future of Magens.

The Magens Bay watershed is approximately 1.7 sq miles in area. The main wetland is centrally located within the 320-acre Magens Bay Preserve, a combination of protected lands owned by the VI Government, The Nature Conservancy, and the MBA. Within the Magens Bay Preserve there are three distinct wetlands: 1) the large, primary complex adjacent to the entry road often referred to as the central wetland “basin” 2) a smaller area within the arboretum at the southwestern end of the beach; and, 3) a small wetland at the northern end of the beach. The watershed is home to many plants & animals, including those of the arboretum, coconut grove, mangroves, and nature trail. For more about watershed management, including maps, refer to the Wetland and Watershed Assessment Report and other resources below.
