Friends of Fairchild at Magens Bay meeting this weekend - Sat Mar 14 10:00
It’s been a while, so let’s meet! This Saturday March 14, 2026 at 10:00 AM. We’ll try for a hybrid meeting: weather permitting, we’ll be in-person at a picnic table near (not under) Shed 4, plus online using Google Meet at https://meet.google.com/get-fnmk-foi.
What we’ve been doing:
The big news is that we submitted the application to register with the Lt Governor’s office. (Thanks George!)
We have been looking into recycling efforts at Magens and possible next steps.
Some time back we did preliminary research on what beaches elsewhere do for long-term preservation and sustainability. Of particular interest, one model that a few beaches in Hawaii are experimenting with is having daily capacity limits for visitors.
What we’re hearing:
VIPCA brought up moorings at a Senate hearing on February 10, though there was nothing particularly conclusive.
On facebook, local are complaining about the volume and placement of the chairs, as are tourists (though others point out that most of the beach is less crowded).
We’ve also heard directly from some Friends, including contradictory statements. For instance, I heard from multiple people about “900 new chairs”, with one Friend saying that they heard this directly from a Magens Bay Beach Club employee, but I also heard from another Friend that they reached out to one of the owners who denied it as only a rumor. I also separately heard that MBA had ordered about 20 new chairs for Lindquist. (MBA, not a concessionaire, rents a small number of chairs at Lindquist.) If/when we get clarity, we will share what is actually planned.
What’s coming up (besides the Friends' meeting this Saturday):
Presumably an MBA townhall soon, but we haven’t heard a date. We will announce it when we do.
As always, if we know about it, it's on http://calendar.friendsmagens.org/.
What you can do:
Please spread the word about this group, and tell people about our website https://www.friendsmagens.org/ and the mailing list.
We’re still looking for people who can commit to posting regularly on Facebook on behalf of this group.
