Meeting summary:
Intros/interests/why we're here: our beach, handicap access, sunscreen, concerns about MBA board lack of transparency, chairs are an abomination, and many other reasons and beautiful testimonials.
Board
Proposed as possible members - Philip Spillane, Gene Brin, Matthew Hodge, Jonetta Darden-Hill, Alyssa Roy, Sara Smollett (secretary), Danielle Marie, Erie Mathias, JoAnne Sickler.
Please volunteer if you can commit; in particular, no one has yet volunteered to be the president.
Incorporation requisites
Minimum 3 board members and 3 officers, these can be the same people but prefer that they are not, more people is probably better especially at the start, targeting ~7-11.
Articles of incorporation and resident agent - thank you Matthew Hodge!
Financials - tax ID for 501c3, question about filing taxes in June, but we'll be a non-profit and won't have any money yet anyway, we should probably get about $1K in initial funding which people have tentatively pledged.
Name - last meeting we decided on "Friends of Fairchild at Magens Bay", which is long but we can abbreviate, proposal to delegate naming to the board.
Mission statement - there's a draft that has received positive feedback so far, will be re-sent to the group, volunteer for a mission statement committee if interested in finalizing it.
Moorings is the most immediate issue
Need a committee to get started on this ASAP, volunteer if interested.
It’s an election year - need to get candidates to take positions publicly on moorings (and other Magens issues).
If we want legislation to make Magens a no-anchoring and/or no-mooring zone, we should draft and propose legislation.
Use social media to bring about change.
Olasee Davis' article - need to push to get more Magens coverage in the press, more MBA transparency, The Source generally covers MBA board meetings but The Daily News doesn't, make sure issues we care about are covered.
We need to have representatives at all the MBA board meetings.
Moorings are an improvement over anchoring, as they don't damage the seagrass and any corals, no boats at all would be a bigger environmental improvement.
Heard that they might be increasing the number of moorings they are talking about putting in at Magens (can anyone confirm/clarify?).
Enforcement concerns - DPNR hasn't been able to enforce the current rules (e.g., number of days boats can stay).
Mailing list - tell others - they can subscribe by emailing friends-of-magens+subscribe@googlegroups.com or going to https://groups.google.com/g/friends-of-magens, or just send me their contact info and I'll add them.
Next meeting - Thu May 9 5:30PM, hybrid at Magens and on Zoom.
