Community meeting:
We had a small Friends community meeting on Saturday May 30. This included two calls for volunteers:
Social media: It is critical that we have volunteers to maintain a social media presence for Friends. Otherwise, we will not be able to keep the public informed, effectively apply pressure, or attract new members. Please volunteer or suggest possible volunteers. Students welcome: now that we are a registered non-profit, this should count as community service hours.
Outreach to political candidates: Similar to how we previously sent current senators a summary of some of our positions, we intend to send something to (some of) the ~100 political candidates. Volunteers to collect addresses and review the letter would be much appreciated.
We had an open discussion of various topics including the lack of news about an MBA townhall, the discovery of a dead turtle (which appeared to have died of natural causes), trash remaining around the chair areas on Wednesday evenings/Thursday mornings and trash near the water line, how we can align with DPNR and DPSR, that many informal groups meet at Magens and might be interested to join Friends, and speculation as to whether more locals would go to the beach if the hours when the gate charges admission were reduced to peak hours only.
Happening at Magens:
Among the many other birds at Magens, there are baby green herons nesting on the upstream side of the bridge.
Friday June 12: MBA board meeting at 9AM at Shed 4.
Saturday June 13: King of the Wings.
